Hello there! I’m Summer Knowles, a multi-award-winning journalist and expert storyteller with 20 years of broadcast media experience. Like most people, though, that’s not all I am. I’m also a proud wife and mother, an advocate for moms dealing with postpartum challenges, and a fitness enthusiast. But let me share something that’s been close to my heart throughout my journey.

Someone once, early on in my career, very matter-of-factly told me, “you can’t have it all, it’s just not realistic to be very career-oriented and also get married and have a family.” I distinctly remember thinking to myself, with a hint of attitude, why not? You’ve gotta understand that 1) I’m the kind of person that when told I can’t do something, I will exhaust every last resource to prove otherwise, and 2) my mother was a remarkable Army officer and mother and partner to my dad (also an Army officer). She not only shattered stereotypes but shattered any doubts I had about my ability to do the same (and have fulfilling roles in multiple spheres). Her example became a guiding light for me. As an adult, I carry that lesson with me every day while realizing that what I do or don’t do can impact how my daughters, other young girls, and women perceive what is possible for them.

I strongly believe that almost anything is achievable with a plan, hard work, a strong support network and a willingness to make some sacrifices along the way. That’s precisely what I’ve done in my career and personal life. As an award-winning journalist, I’ve had the privilege of bringing impactful stories to my audience, shedding light on critical issues, and giving voice to those who need and deserve to be heard. My commitment to being credible, reliable, and authentic has been the driving force behind my work, and I take immense pride in being a trusted source of information.

Some of the most impactful stories I’ve told include, but are not limited to, a story in the aftermath of George Floyd’s tragic death about how race can impact one’s perception of police. It was part of a news documentary (my brainchild) Project Community: Crusade for Change. It earned the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award in 2021, my fifth such honor. Additionally, at the beginning of the pandemic, I did a story spotlighting COVID-19’s profound impact on local prisons, prisoners, and their families. It was extremely fulfilling to give this vulnerable, often-forgotten community a voice. But perhaps my most fulfilling storytelling came more recently about why I decided to ditch wigs and hair extensions on air. By embracing more of my natural self and beauty, I aimed to inspire and affirm my young daughters. It was a story I did to just kind of document it for myself and my family, but after posting it on my Facebook page, with nearly 100k views, it ended up inspiring and affirming MANY other young girls and women across the country! I believe it’s crucial for young girls to see strong, confident role models who embrace their authenticity, and I’m committed to being that kind of role model.

So, whether I’m uncovering truth, sharing a unique perspective, or just relaying pertinent community information as a journalist, supporting and/or advocating for moms on their postpartum journey, or embracing wellness through fitness & diet, I’m driven by a sense of purpose to make a positive difference… hopefully helping reconstruct the narrative around what women can achieve in their careers and personal lives. But of course it’s not just about what we achieve; it’s about the impact we have on shaping the dreams and aspirations of the next generation. Down for that? If so, let’s get it!
